About Us!

Good Monday Morning!

Ok, so you now know, from my previous posts, a little about me and about how we chose our business name.  I have plenty of ideas for posts, but I thought I should tell you a little about us, before I get to the nitty gritty of flooring and such.

Tim was born in Toronto Canada.  His father had immigrated there from Croatia with the dreams of eventually moving to California!  He moved to the San Fernando valley when he was just about two.  From there his family moved to Simi Valley, until the mid 70's.  Tim graduated from Newbury Park High School and started working for his father's hardwood floor business.

I was born in Northridge California.  When I was two, my parents moved to Newbury Park, where I have been ever since!  When they first moved here, Wendy Drive was a dirt road!!  I too graduated from Newbury Park High School.  I went to Moorpark college, briefly, before heading out into the workforce.  I worked, doing telemarketing sales for a computer company before quitting to be a full time mom and a part time hardwood floor company owner. (see first post!)

At the ripe old age of almost 18, I saw Tim at a wedding and inquired. :)  He was heading to the big 20th birthday.  We were fixed up and as they say, the rest is history.  We have been together for over 30 years and married for 27.  Wow, where does the time fly?

Time flies by quickly with four boys, a house, a business and our extended family, that's how time flies!  We are extremely blessed!!  Tim enjoys playing soccer with a mens soccer team that he's been playing with, since before we met.  He also loves to snow ski, although this year has been a bit of a disappointment, weather wise.  Tim's always busy.  If he's not working or coaching/playing soccer, you can usually find him outside in the yard doing something.  We usually see him when the sun goes down.  I keep busy with everyone's schedules, work, volunteering for the kids schools and just about everything in-between.  I have a big interest in interior design and I'm dabbling in jewelry making.  I hope to start another blog and possibly another business, that relates to home decor.  Stay tuned!

The guys that work for us, have been with us for over twenty years!!  Luis and Willy are brothers and hard workers.  They both have families of their own and live in this area as well.

Well, now you know more than you probably wanted or needed to about us. :)  I've had a chance to talk to a few of you recently and look forward to hearing from more of you.

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Renee :)

What's In A Name?

As defined in the Webster's New World College Dictionary...

traditional - adj. 1 of, handed down by, or conforming to tradition; conventional

floor - n. 1 the inside bottom surface of a room, hall, etc., on which one stands or walks

Tim is a fourth generation hardwood floor craftsman.  His great grandfather, grandfather and father (all from Croatia) have all been in the hardwood floor business.  Tim started working for his father's company, in Chatsworth, in the 70's!  Shortly after we married, his father was transitioning from one aspect of flooring, into another.  We decided to branch out and start a business of our own.  After thinking of names for awhile, Tim came up with Traditional Floors.  He said that wood and stone are traditional floors, that can go with any design style, so a name was born.

Now, more than 25 years later, we continue to install beautiful, traditional flooring for our customers.  Sure, styles come and go (remember the mauve and blue of the early 80's-our first condo had white washed, hand scraped flooring with tulips and hearts stenciled around the edge!) but hardwood floors and tile have always remained in style.  They are a durable and neutral starting point.  With the many species, patterns and colors, you can use them in anything from a modern house to a country setting.  They can be repaired, re-surfaced and re-stained to meet each occupants tastes, making hardwood floors, especially valued in a home for re-sale purposes.

I grew up in Newbury Park, in a raised foundation home.  It came with floors and over the years they have even been covered with avocado green shag!  Today, they have been re-sanded and are still as beautiful as they were, when installed over 45 years ago!  How's that for bang for your buck!

If you think about it, traditions are steeped deep in most of our lives.  We have seasonal traditions, like skiing.  Holiday traditions, which to us, mean attending mass on Christmas eve, before heading to Grandma's house. Or, my favorite, serving each member of our family, on their birthdays, with a special plate that says "It's your day".  Do you have a special tradition in your family?  I'd love to hear about it :)

Leap Day
by Renee Talan on 02/29/2012

Leap Day....Seems like an appropriate day for me to leap into my first blog!  My name is Renee Talan and I'm the wife of Tim Talan, mother to our four boys and office manager extraordinaire :)  With this blog, I hope to add some valuable information about flooring, give you some facts and have a little fun!

According to Wikipedia, leap day happens once every four years, because it actually takes us 365 days and six hours to make one revolution around the sun.  This is according to the Georgian calendar.  So, to account for the additional six hours each year, we add one day, every four.

I had a leap year of my own sorts this past September (ok, so that's a bit of a stretch?)  I have been a mostly, stay at home mom, for the past, almost.....23 years!  In September, our last son went off to KINDERGARTEN!  Yes, that's right, kindergarten.  We have two boys in college, one in middle school and now our little pistol, I mean Angel, has joined the ranks and entered school.  For years now, I have been telling Tim, that I was going to get more involved in the business.  Each year would come and I'd get involved in something with the kids school or one of their sports and my time would be taken.  I'm probably happiest, when I'm volunteering for something!  So....last August I once again told Tim that I would have all this time, once Timothy was in school (it's a full day kindergarten) and I'd be able to spend so much more time in the office.  Well, here it is February 29th and I'm finally making good on my promise.  I've re-organized the office, fixed up the website and if you call, I might even answer the phone!!  My hope is to make your experience with us the best that it can be.  We realize you are putting yourself in our hands and we promise to do what it takes to make you a satisfied customer with a product in your home, that you can be proud of!

Enjoy your extra day!  Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you'll check back often!
